Sheraton Hotel Times Square

The Sheraton at 811 7th Ave at 52nd Street in New York City has a gym that outsiders can join. If you're a cardio bunny or like the machines, you're good, otherwise nope. There is a smith machine, and a squat rack with bumper plates you're not allowed to use without a trainer. Pass.

Mid-City Gym, 42nd Street

Mid-City Gym's other and now only branch, on 42th Street b/t 8th and 9th Avenue in New York City, is my new home gym. There's a truly odd safety squat rack with hard to adjust straps, and a crossfitty oly lifting area with two new safety rails for squatting. Two benches and an incline, no decline, dumbbells up to 120. Lots of machines, cables, etc. Nothing to write home about. Chalk is prohibited, but you can sneak it in. There is a decent culture of powerlifters and a few strongman/oly types. Update! There's now a normal safety squat rack, if you attach the safety squat arms to the Rogue rig. Plus you can bench there. Pretty good.

Mid-City Gym, 49th St

Mid-City Gym, on 49th Street and 8th Avenue in New York City, is my home gym, at least until it closes at the end of this week. Two safety squat racks, two benches, incline, decline, dumbbells up to 120. Machines galore, both stack-loaded and plate loaded. A calf raise supposedly used by Arnold. Dirty, cheap. Many bent barbells. Gets the job done. I am going to miss it.

Powerhouse Gym - North Haven, CT

A few weeks ago I went to Montanari BrosPowerhouse Gym. Located at 31 Bernhard Road, New Haven, CT 06473.

The facility is large and clean. There's a boxing ring available for an additional fee. They have a monolift that doesn't seem to be used much, a power cage, GHR, reverse hyper, a bunch of squat racks that you can addsafties to. Much much bodybuilding equipment. Chalk is good. A cardio deck overlooking the weight floor. Day pass was $15. Would go back for sure

Mission statement

Let's not get grandiose here, I just want a place to record gyms that I've been at and liked, in the aim of helping other people who are looking for gyms where you can powerlift well.

Galaxy Gym - Moultonborough, NH

For my first trick, I'll review Galaxy Gym. Located at 61 Whittier Highway,Moultonborough, NH 03254.

This is a serious powerlifting training facility. They have a monolift, a deadlift platform with jack, power cage, GHR, reverse hypher, and various other toys. Chalk is good. While I was there, there was a gentleman moving some impressive weight in a bench shirt. Cardio on top. It's a little grimy, but just the right amount. No bumper plates. Would train there again. I believe a day pass was about $10.
